Duck Derby

On May 22, hundreds of Southwest Airlines Employees gathered to witness the event of the year, the first annual Duck Derby presented by the Southwest Onboarding Team! Southwest Airlines raced 5,000 rubber ducks in Seaworld San Antonio’s Castaway Cruisin’ at Lost Lagoon to celebrate the success of its Onboarding program. Each duck represented a Southwest Airlines Employee who will sponsor a New Hire this year. Ducks were purchased by current Employees to raise money to give the new Employees a Southwest kit including a lanyard, t-shirt, and LUVing note welcoming them to the Family.

The race began when 5,000 ducks were dropped into the water. The ducks maneuvered their way down the mile long river while dodging obstacles and rapids. The race ended as the first 25 ducks funneled into the duck “pen” built by Southwest Airlines Maintenance Employees. The Employees donated their time and talent to build the contraption that named the winner. The lucky ducks won prizes such as an iPod, jewelry, Nintendo Wii, SeaWorld vacation package, and more! Employees enjoyed face painting, food, and FUN at the event.

Southwest Airlines Vice President of Ground Operations made a special presentation announcing Southwest Airlines donation of $1,000 to the SeaWorld/Busch Gardens Conservation Fund.
