What is a 737 aircraft?

The Boeing 737 commercial jet is the crucial element in the Southwest Airlines philosophy. It is considered a medium sized aircraft that is simple, reliable, and has one of the lowest operating costs.

The cockpit display unit shows many displays that provide the pilots with very important information, including:

  • Marker Beacon - a series of radio beacons to help the crew during the approach to the runway.
  • Mach/Airspeed Indicator - displays airspeed information for the crew.
  • Radio Distance Magnetic Indicator - has needles that show the direction to the selected radio navigation source.
  • Flight Mode Annunciations - indicate which mode autopilot is using.
  • Attitude Indicator - displays aircraft attitude information for the crew.
  • Horizontal Situation Indicator - uses course information for navigation purposes.
  • Altimeter - displays altitude information for the crew.
  • Vertical Speed Indicator - gives the crew information on the vertical speed of the aircraft.
  • Navigation Display - displays approach information, navigation, or moving map information to the crew.
