Engaging Students
Southwest Airlines realizes the challenges that many educators face when working to engage their students’ imaginations during the spring semester. In many schools across the country the spring schedule is action-packed with state testing and curriculum requirements among so many other things. It’s time to have some FUN! At Southwest Airlines, we are committed to bringing America’s future leaders closer to the fun of learning by committing our resources and time to inspiring students and helping them define, articulate and plan to their future success.
Curriculum
An Adopt-A-Pilot curriculum booklet is provided to each student in the Adopt-A-Pilot program at no cost. The curriculum is designed to lead fifth grade classrooms through lessons on science, geography, math, creative writing, and other core subjects, all based in aviation-related activities. Students will also research careers, F.L.I.G.H.T. values, and realize the importance of staying in school.

Timeline
Timeline In order to accommodate the busy schedules of Pilots and schools, Adopt-A-Pilot allows you the freedom and flexibility to set your own schedule. The program officially kicks off in February and ends in June. The visits are coordinated by you and the Pilot. In most cases, the Southwest Airlines ‘adopted’ Pilot visits the classroom one hour a week for four weeks. Registration for the Adopt-A-Pilot program opens in September and closes in November at www.southwest.com/adoptapilot. Schools and Pilots are geographically matched with each other throughout November. You will be notified by email on the status of your request no later than December. Program materials are provided by Southwest Airlines and are delivered to Pilots and schools in January. Take a look at the program timeline for important dates and deadlines. The Adopt-A-Pilot Crew is always standing by to provide more information or answer any questions. The Crew can be contacted at adoptapilot@wnco.com
What are Teachers Saying About Adopt-A-Pilot?
“Sooooo fun!”
“The role model example that Pilot Jim provided for the students in my class was an excellent example of how a corporation can make an impact in the lives of kids. His positive message on goal setting and choosing a career in which one enjoys his/her work each day was great. I appreciated his message of keeping options open, and in order to be successful and happy in any career, education is the key to get there.”
“We LOVED our adopted pilot.”
“Your Adopt a Pilot program is a great model to help develop leadership.”
“Coming into the classroom the way Southwest does shows students that there is more to running a company or flying a ‘plane’. ‘The’ students got to see how everyone in the corporation is an important factor in the running a company.”
