Crossing the U.S. Border


Currently Southwest Airlines offers intra- and inter-state travel within the United States. Because we offer service from cities such as Seattle, Buffalo, El Paso, and San Diego to name a few, we often have Customers who desire to come into the United States for business and/or pleasure airline travel.

All persons traveling by air outside of the United States are required to present a passport book or other valid travel document to enter or re-enter the United States. All persons traveling by land and sea outside of the United States are required to present a passport book/card, or other valid travel documents to enter or re-enter the United States.

Effective June 1, 2009, all U.S. citizens traveling by land and sea are now required to present a passport book, passport card, or WHTI-compliant document when entering the United States. For more information, please visit U.S. Department of State's Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative information.
